THE PROBLEM

Young professionals and busy workers lack the time to prepare cooked meals. Ordering fast food meals regularly is unhealthy and not adventurous.

THE GOAL

Goal of the project was to provide a quick and

easy way to access diverse Korean dishes. The target of these would be people who need a healthy alternative to cooking while discovering new experiences.

MY ROLE

My role in this project was as a UI Designer, Interviewer and UX researcher.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- UX Research
- Conducting Interviews
- Digital and Paper Wireframing

- Digital mockups & prototyping
- Designing & Testing UI.

Understanding the User

User research summary

Research conducted here was primarily primary research data which entailed conducting interviews with young professionals in Southern Africa to assess what their needs, pain points and reasons for use were when ordering food on an app.

In the interviews we assessed what challenges users had with competitor apps through a competitor audit and the emotions they go through while using the app. Lastly we also asked their opinions on what they would like to see in a food ordering app that would make their lives easier. Unmoderated & Moderated usability test was conducted as well. Research revealed that users needed to feel security and trustworthiness in service delivery in the process.

User research: pain points

Imagery

Lack of good imagery and descriptions of the dishes. What ingredients are used in the food and if the final order does not look like what is presented.

Time to Plan

Delivery charges and ETA to deliver time are not always explicit and make your day harder to plan. This extends to receiving food and it is cold.

Dietary Restrictions

Anxiety about getting dietary restrictions correct such as allergies or religious observances. Only find out if order was correct when you receive it.

Security

Security of Payment method and availability of multiple payment methods.

User Journey Map

Mapping Kehlani’s user journey revealed how helpful it would be to have accurate time tracking on ordered meals in an app that is calming and pleasant to use

Design procedure

Paper wireframes

The goals were to make the simplest user flow and the shortest checkout process possible without compromising core product goals.

Digital wireframes

Time for meal prep ETA to help user who are very busy to fit in their schedule

This Wireframe was drawn from the first app prototype which will contain detail on the meal description, history and allergens.

The app was built taking specific dietary requirements in mind.

After logging in we wanted to reduce time to checkout so there are minimal distractions and few page steps to checkout

Low fidelity prototype

The low fidelity prototype connected the primary user flow of choosing a meal with an interesting cultural story and easily trustworthy checkout process.

Usability Study

An unmediated Usability Study was conducted with prompts asking the user to place an order and were timed on checkout time. The first study revealed various navigation issues which helped guide wireframes to mockups. The second study refined the mechanics and aesthetic.

Mockups

The first iteration of wireframes contained a busy and clunky layout of the meal description. With second iteration we used gestalt principles to change the layout to one with clearer hierarchy.

After second usability study the insight that the featured meal hero image was not clear enough and the prototype did not drive to the correct page. In addition more spacing was added between elements to reduce the busy-ness of the page.

High fidelity prototype

The final high fidelity prototype presented cleaner user flows for customizing an authentic Korean dish for delivery. It met users need for dietary requirements, repeat orders and ETA on meal preparation to delivery.

Accessibility considerations

Colours were reviewed to assess if the orange shade and dark blue were visible enough

Future capabilities for screen readers in development were taken into consideration, therefore each action has text attached to it.

We took into consideration allergen information under each meal description for those with specific dietary requirements.

Takeaways

IMPACT

the app makes users feel like they are learning more about a different culture while going about their regular day.

By including dietary requirements and allergen information the restaurant has improve it’s image by taking into consideration people who may be excluded.

WHAT I LEARNED

I learned that many navigation issues may arise from users who have different approaches to using applications and only by conducting research will these pain points be resolved. Iterating on designs is always an opportunity to learn more from different users.

Next steps

Continue iterating after development. UX is a continuous journey. We can learn more from additional usability studies.

Adding new meals and dishes into the design with additional cultural history and information.

Include a help page for support capacity for the order app.
